Table Size & Seating Tips

Bringing the perfect fit to your space and your celebrations.

At Familytime Custom Furniture, we view the dining table as the cornerstone of the home. It is where stories unfold, traditions live on, and daily life transforms into meaningful memories.

Selecting the ideal table is about more than filling a room—it is about crafting an environment that balances intentional design with everyday utility. From intimate breakfast corners to expansive dining rooms meant for hosting, this guide is designed to help you find the perfect proportions and silhouette to elevate your lifestyle.

When choosing a table, balance your day-to-day seating needs with your occasional hosting habits. Pay close attention to the leg design—pedestal bases offer more legroom than traditional corner legs. To make sure the piece fits beautifully, map out its dimensions on your floor using painter's tape or paper templates. Finally, double-check your measurements to ensure a comfortable traffic flow, leaving 36 to 48 inches of open space between the table edge and the walls or surrounding furniture

Keep in mind: Total seating capacity may vary depending on your chair dimensions and the table's leg design.

Tip 1: Seating Capacity

Form Meets Function: Finding the Perfect Table Base

It dictates how well your table flows with your room layout and, most importantly, how comfortably your guests can sit. We design a diverse selection of premium bases engineered to strike the perfect balance between structural stability, spatial efficiency, and timeless beauty.

  • Trestle Base (Two Supports with a Center Beam):

  • Side Chairs: Simple, streamlined, and highly versatile, these armless designs tuck fully under your tabletop to maximize floor space. They are the ideal choice for compact rooms or lining the sides of longer gathering tables.

  • Arm Chairs: A traditional favorite for the heads of the table, arm chairs bring added comfort and a refined, formal touch. Use them to anchor your space with extra presence and visual polish.

  • Upholstered Chairs: Bring plush softness and an elevated aesthetic to your dining area. Available in a curated selection of premium fabrics and finishes, these are perfect for lingering over long dinners in refined interiors.

  • Bench Seating: Benches infuse your dining space with a casual, welcoming energy and incredible seating flexibility. They are highly popular for families with young children or for maximizing guest capacity along a single side.

  • Mixed Seating: Blending different styles—like placing statement arm chairs at the ends and versatile side chairs along the center—creates a beautifully collected, custom-designed look that showcases your personal style.

Tip 2: The Painters Tape or Bedsheet Trick

One of the easiest ways to make sure a table will actually fit your space is to mock it up before you order.

Use painters tape on the floor to outline the table footprint, or lay down a bedsheet.

Then step back and live with it for a day or two — sit down at imaginary chairs, walk around it, open nearby doors and drawers.

If a 6.75' table is what maximizes your space, perfect. That's what I'll build.

Tip 3: Spacing Rules

If you know the room's dimensions but can't mock it up in the space, here's a spacing rule that makes the math easier:

  • Aim for at least 3 feet of clearance around all four sides of the table.

That's the minimum for a chair to be pushed back comfortably when someone stands up, or for a person to slide behind a seated guest.
  • If you really need to maximize seating, consider a bench along one or both sides instead of chairs.

Benches seat more people in less space, and they can tuck fully under the table when not in use.
